Book Discussion

Parenting Group/ Book Discussion on 1/21/12 was a great way to kick off the new year. This quarter we discussedNurtureshock by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman. The authors reviewed theories and research to dispel myths and provoke thought about common parenting techniques from toddlerhood to the teenage years. Several parents from Counterpane with children in all three of our school communities enjoyed good food and tea and warm conversations about topics such as teaching self-control, lying, teenage rebellion, how to talk about race/skin color, and praise for work. Every conversation included what it looks like at home and how it is addressed at school, with insight from all viewpoints. We are eager to have another discussion in the next quarter and are looking for topics/titles. You do NOT have to read the book to attend a meeting!! We welcome all discussion, the books just allow us to have focus and objectives. If you know of a good book for discussion about parenting of any kind (behavior, academics, nutrition, morality, etc) or have a topic in mind you would like to hear others’ viewpoints on, please let us know. (Thank you! Coleen Stinson)
